Stanley Kubrick’s final film, 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut, remains his most controversial and misunderstood. A dream-like journey into the darker corners of marriage and sexuality, the film was labeled an “erotic thriller” upon release, a descriptor Kubrick would have likely objected to had he lived long enough to see the critical reaction. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman – married in real life at the time – play a couple whose marijuana-induced intimate confessions set this journey on its course, climaxing in a now-highly referenced and parodied sex masquerade held by an elite secret society. Regardless of what one makes of the film’s meaning, its visual splendor, meticulous sets (even the New York street scenes were a soundstage) and costuming cannot be dismissed, nor can the commitment of the high-profile leads. With Sidney Pollack and Leelee Sobieski.
